Whether you are looking for a great SUV to get around town, to go on a long road trip, or for hitting the trail, a Jeep is a fantastic choice. Although most Jeep models can be amazing picks for going off-road, there is no denying that there is something special about the Jeep Wrangler and all of its off-road potential. Choosing the right Wrangler is made a lot easier when you choose the right NJ Jeep Wrangler dealer that will put your needs first and work hard to make sure you find the model with everything you need. You have a lot of different options when looking at the Wrangler, so it is important to have someone by your side to help you out.

Here at Spirit Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we are passionate about all of our vehicles and the full lineup of Jeep models – that being said, the Wrangler certainly stands out as truly remarkable. In many ways, the Jeep Wrangler is the direct descendant of the original Jeep, and you can trace its lineage back to the Second World War. While the Jeep brand might not be as old as some others like GM or Ford, it is just as integral to American history – and that is something we are proud to be a part of. Come visit us at Spirit CDJR to learn more, and let us show you everything the Jeep Wrangler has to offer.

The Jeep Wrangler History and Legacy

Although other automotive brands have been around longer, few are as deeply entrenched in 20th Century American history as the Jeep – and the Jeep Wrangler, in its own way. Jeep brand owners (they have changed a lot over the years) have never specifically said it, but pretty much everyone agrees that the modern Wrangler is the successor of the original Willys Jeep. So to understand the history of the Wrangler, you have to look back to where Jeep all began: World War II.

We should actually go back a little further – in World War I; something became very clear over the course of the conflict: horses were on the way out. Prior to that, horses and cavalry had often been the backbone of military strength and transportation – for supplies, communications, and more – during war and battle. But over the duration of the First World War, the US Army could see that horses were going to be replaced by machines.

Following World War I, the US Army started funding the development of a vehicle that could be used in future conflicts. There were a number of tests and lots of research and development done, but it ultimately culminated in the creation of the Willys MB, which was the first Jeep as it came to be known. This was a workhorse that was absolutely essential during World War II. It was designed to handle any obstacle or terrain, so it could go anywhere, with a lightweight design that allowed it to be easily moved if it got stuck, plus standard parts that were easy to keep on hand for repairs during the war.

Soldiers loved the Jeep, and many historians point to its use as being an integral part of America’s success during the war. So, after World War II, it was no surprise that many of those soldiers came home and wanted to be able to drive a Jeep in civilian life. After several years of development, the first Willys-Overland Civilian Jeep, or CJ, became available here in the US, and it was an immediate hit. It looked and handled much like the original military version and was popular amongst farmers, veterans, and a wide range of other drivers – from 1945 to 1949, more than 200,000 CJ models were produced.

Although it changed and evolved over the years and through several generations, the Jeep CJ remained in production all the way into the mid-1980s. While Jeep might not have ever officially said the Wrangler is an heir to the original CJ legacy, we cannot help but notice that production of the CJ ended the same time the Wrangler was introduced. First released in 1986, the Jeep Wrangler immediately drew a lot of attention as the next step in the Jeep name and the inheritor of that amazing legacy.

In the 30+ years since it was introduced, the Jeep Wrangler has not only lived up to that amazing reputation and history but managed to build upon it. For many people, the Wrangler has become the quintessential off-road vehicle, with the ability to go boldly where no other vehicle dare tread, blazing a trail in the wildest and roughest terrain. Sure, there are other off-road vehicles available out there – even plenty of other Jeep models that offer amazing, Trail-Rated performance – but when push comes to shove, there is only one Jeep Wrangler.

Today, the Jeep Wrangler is more powerful, more brilliantly constructed, and more adventurous than ever before. Whether you are looking for a Wrangler to enjoy in the city and take you camping on the weekends, or you have a passion for going off-road, or you are interested in overlanding and leaving civilization behind for weeks at a time, the Wrangler has you covered. When you get behind the wheel of a Wrangler and experience everything it has to offer, you cannot help but feel yourself become a part of that legacy: an enduring reminder of American ingenuity and the adventurous spirit of the 20th Century that remains with us today.

Notable Jeep Models Throughout Time

Jeep has a long, proud history of building versatile vehicles capable of whatever their driver requires. With the first generation of 4x4 Jeeps emerging in the 1940s right during the Second World War, it’s no wonder the iconic brand has a tough reputation. Going into the next decades, the image of Jeep was linked to mean adventure and freedom; a go anywhere do anything vehicle. And Jeep is nothing if not versatile. Starting in the 1960s, Jeep introduced what was known as the Tuxedo Park CJ, which was a luxury special edition of the Wrangler that ended up being used in the inaugural presidential parade in 1965, a far cry from mountain passes and desert trails.

But in the 1970s, Jeep really took things to the next level when they introduced the first full-time 4x4 system on their Wranglers. And with editions like the Jeep Wrangler Renegade already boasting a V8 engine, the Wrangler truly became known as an all-terrain vehicle capable of handling almost any off-road situation. Through the 1980s, Jeep maintained its image as one of the premiere offroading vehicles with multiple editions introduced, including the CJ-5 and CJ-7 Jeep Laredo, the CJ-8 Scrambler, and the Wrangler YJ.

The iconic Jeep brand, though, is never one to settle, introducing the groundbreaking Jeep Wrangler TJ in the 1990s. With a new Quadra-coil suspension system, the almost completely redesigned TJ set the bar high for what an off-roading vehicle should be capable of. Its handling capabilities were so impressive that the Wrangler was awarded 4x4 of the year in 1997. But Jeep knew it could improve the design even more, introducing the highly popular Jeep Wrangler Rubicon in 2003. Next year Jeep introduced the Rubicon Unlimited, a combination of the rugged capabilities of the Rubicon with the larger wheelbase of the Wrangler Unlimited.

A brand without limits, Jeep continues to produce inspiring and iconic models, its most recognizable arguably being the Jeep Wrangler. It’s no wonder the vehicle is popular. From battlefields to mountain trails, over sandy beaches, and onto the highway, all without taking a pause, each generation of Wrangler only gets better. Delivering more power and function without sacrificing the comfort or features drivers want in a vehicle. The Wrangler has been built for long-lasting durability. Where the road ends, Wrangler keeps going, taking drivers onto their next adventure year after year with compromise.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler

Although the modern Jeep Wrangler is far advanced beyond what was available nearly 80 years ago, it still owes much to that original design. You could look at the 2021 Wrangler beside the original Jeep of World War II and the legacy from one to the other, over nearly a century, is absolutely clear. And yet, despite it still being a recognizable and enduring part of 20th Century automotive history, the 2021 model has some of the most impressive features and improvements we have ever seen in the Wrangler.

For example, there are three different standard engines available for the 2021 Wrangler, including an impressive V6 with a mild-hybrid system for added power and even an EcoDiesel option if you want great fuel economy and monstrous torque. When you combine this with other options, like an 8-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission, along with two-door and four-door models, with many more options available, you can quickly see just how much freedom you have to get the right Wrangler for what you need. This is a hallmark of the Jeep Wrangler: the freedom to get what you want and go where you want.

The design of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler is still everything you would expect from this prestigious brand, including removable doors, both hardtop and soft-top roof options, and a fold-down windshield so you can really open up the interior. There is no experience quite like hitting the trail in a Wrangler, feeling the wind in your hair and the spray of a stream on your legs as you crawl, splash, and play through the wilderness. With numerous 4x4 systems available, and the most aggressive and responsive terrain management system around, the Wrangler is designed inside and out, front to rear, to be the ultimate off-road machine.

When Jeep labels a vehicle as “Trail-Rated,” this is not simply marketing hype – it is a promise that their vehicle can handle anything the trail throws at it. The Jeep Wrangler has amazing traction, articulation, maneuverability, and ground clearance, with water fording that lets you go pretty much anywhere you can imagine. Best of all, starting with the 2021 model, there are now two exciting new options for the Wrangler, with remarkable engines that we have been hoping to see for a long time.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe

This is the first Jeep 4xe model (pronounced “four by E”) and the introduction of an all-new level of performance, off-road capability, and freedom. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is a plug-in hybrid SUV that offers an amazing combination of range and reliability, with the Trail-Rated performance you would expect from this prestigious brand. Its impressive engine delivers 470 lb-ft of instant torque that lets you go from 0 to 60 in 6 seconds or maneuver over the most demanding of obstacles.

Plug-in hybrid functionality is perfect whether you are looking to get around town or go on long road trips, as it can maximize your driving distance or offer short-range all-electric trips. The engine can go nearly 21 miles in Electric Mode, which allows for zero-emission driving and makes short trips easy without using any gas. For longer trips, you can go about 370 miles on a full tank of gas thanks to the hybrid engine, getting about 49 MPGe while enjoying all of the capability you expect from a Wrangler. There are more 4xe vehicles expected for other Jeep models, but it is no surprise they chose the Wrangler as the flagship for this exciting new option.

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392

If you are looking for a Jeep Wrangler with a focus on pure power and performance, over fuel economy, or any other concern, then the Rubicon 392 is the way to go. This is the quickest and most powerful Wrangler ever made and the answer to many Jeep fans who have wondered when they would get a model with a more impressive engine. It is the perfect combination of the Wrangler’s legendary off-road capability with raw power the likes of which you simply cannot find anywhere else.

All of this power comes from a beastly 6.4L HEMI V8 engine – the first time an engine this powerful has been offered in a Wrangler. The HEMI delivers 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, letting the Rubicon 392 go from 0 to 60 in just 4.5 seconds. It can run the quarter-mile in 13 seconds while still featuring FOX aluminum-bodied 2-inch shocks for incredible maneuverability and articulation on the trail. With 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels and 33-inch mud-terrain tires, not to mention a dual exhaust and quad tailpipes, this is a Jeep Wrangler built to conquer anything, both on the road and off.

2022 Jeep Wrangler

The rugged and well-known Jeep Wrangler is back for 2022, and it’s better than ever. The iconic vehicle from Jeep continues to inspire drivers decade after decade, so this year should be no different. The Wrangler has all the power you’d expect from a Jeep plus the new technology to go along with it. Whether it’s down rutted trails or up a mountain, drivers know they can depend on the Jeep Wrangler to get them there.

Looking at the new 2022 Wrangler, you immediately get that scene of iconic style. It’s one of the most recognizable vehicles on the road, and it’s this style that keeps old drivers but continues to bring new ones into the mix. With timeless features like a soft or hardtop, or the ability to remove the side doors, you know the Wrangler is built for adventure both on and off the road.

The new 2022 Wrangler doesn’t disappoint when it comes to its capabilities. The new Wrangler is more equipped than ever to take drivers where they want to go. With engine options ranging from the 2.0L turbo, which delivers up to 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, along with a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs, the Wrangler doesn’t fail to disappoint. And the power doesn’t stop there! The new Wrangler has multiple engine options depending on a driver’s preference, with options ranging from a 3.0L Ecodiesel engine to a 3.6L V6 Pentastar; there’s enough power to fit any driver’s lifestyle.

And what would a Wrangler be without its famous 4x4 capabilities? With the 2022 Wrangler’s Command-Trac 4x4 system, drivers can be sure their Jeep will never say never. With rock crawling capabilities plus stellar traction control, the Wrangler is up to the challenge when you are. In addition, the Wrangler comes equipped with great off-roading features like heavy-duty steel skid plates and an Off Road+ button that gives drivers that extra assurance of knowing they’ll get to where they want to be no matter the terrain.

The 2022 Wrangler is more than capable when it comes to tough conditions, but that doesn’t mean the driver can’t get there in comfort. The interior of the new 2022 Jeep Wrangler comes with an array of great features, plenty of add-ons, and the latest technology, to make every trip more enjoyable than the last. With available features like heated seats and steering wheel, along with heated side mirrors to help remove frost, you’ll stay warm and comfortable even when the weather is not. And with Dual-Zone Automatic Temperature Control, both the driver and their passenger can ride in comfort without compromise.

The latest and greatest technology ever offered on a Jeep allows drivers to stay connected wherever they venture. Features like a remote keyless entry that can sense the key in your bag without the need for contact make driving a Wrangler more convenient than ever. Add to that 4G Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities that allow drivers and their passengers to connect up to 8 devices within a 50-foot radius; it doesn’t get any easier than that to stay connected.

But the great features don’t stop there; the 2022 Jeep Wrangler has the latest technology at your fingertips with the Uconnect system. The 8.4-inch touchscreen allows drivers to connect with their vehicle with customizable settings and voice commands. The Uconnect system has the ability to connect with a driver’s smartphone, so you can always stay in control while behind the wheel. Adding to that the extra available feature of Uconnect 4C with NAV, drivers get access to a GPS navigational system, so you never get lost along the way.

The extras don’t stop there; with the available Send & Go feature, drivers can use their smartphones to transfer information between their phone and the Wrangler’s Uconnect system. This allows drivers to view things like monthly health reports for their vehicle emailed directly to their inboxes. Plus, you can use remote start from up to 328 feet away. Add to that information like daily car stats and speed control monitoring, and drivers know their Wrangler is always by their side both on and off the road.

With all the great technology and rugged capabilities, don’t think Jeep has forgotten about safety. The Wrangler was built with drivers and their passenger's safety in mind. With great features like Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path Detection and Forward Collision, drivers will always know what’s going on in front, behind, and on either side of their vehicle. Plus, the Wrangler has even more to offer. With additional features like ParkSense and ParkView, it’s never been easier to back up and park even in the tightest of spaces. Let’s not forget the Jeep Wrangler is built to withstand impact in case of an accident. With its solid steel frame and advanced airbag system, Jeep never forgets its number one priority- to keep the driver and passengers feeling safe in any condition, no matter how rough.

Things to Look for in a Used Wrangler

Here at Spirit CDJR, we are pleased to offer not only brand-new Jeep Wrangler models with the latest features but also pre-owned Wranglers. Choosing a used Jeep Wrangler is the perfect way to enjoy the legendary off-road performance it has offered for almost 40 years while still saving some money. Since the Jeep brand is well known for having great aftermarket options in terms of accessories and upgrades, you can also find used Wrangler models that have had some exciting additions for you to enjoy.

When looking at used Jeep Wrangler models, these are some things to keep in mind:

Model Year and Generation – With each new generation, the Wrangler has been updated and improved upon in numerous ways. It is always a good idea to look at the model year with this in mind, as the performance and features you find can vary greatly. You also want to consider the age and mileage of any used model you are interested in.

Engine and Transmission – Numerous engines and transmission options have been available on the Wrangler over the years. Be sure to choose a model with an engine that can handle what you want it to do. Since both manual and automatic transmissions are usually offered, you should pick whichever one works for you.

Trail-Rated Badge – Not every Wrangler model is necessarily designed for optimal off-road performance. If you want to go on some very challenging trails, then look for one that is Trail-Rated and has the best off-road features.

Aftermarket Options – There is a huge selection of aftermarket accessories available for Jeep Wranglers. It is a good idea to look for a model that has Mopar accessories, if any, since these are original manufacturer options that are designed to work on the Wrangler and not create problems.

Certified Pre-Owned – You might be able to find Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Wrangler models, which are in the best condition possible. These have warranty protection and come with other benefits, providing you with a lower price than a new Wrangler, but with peace of mind you cannot get from other used options.
