With the ever-expanding SUV market offering a seemingly endless array of models that cater to a multitude of different drivers, it can often feel overwhelming to begin your search for that perfect model. While many immediately gravitate towards the newest vehicles with the most state-of-the-art features, some are just looking for a combination of a great SUV with modern tech at a price that fits their budget. This is where shopping used can be a fantastic alternative to purchasing brand-new and can get you the features you’re looking for at a price that won’t break the bank. It’s no secret that a new car depreciates in value the second it drives off the lot and can lose almost half its value after five years on the road. Purchasing a pre-owned vehicle from recent model years allows you to bypass this loss in value and still buy a vehicle that is equipped with the innovative features you're looking for in an SUV.

Although there are many brands to consider when searching for an SUV on the used market, there’s nothing quite like a Jeep. With a deep history in the automotive world for over 80 years, Jeep is a truly iconic brand that offers rugged and reliable SUVs that can tackle any challenge in your daily drive. Whether you need a vehicle to traverse through ice and snow with ease or spacious and safe transportation for you and your family, there’s a Jeep model to fit your unique driving needs. For New Jersey residents looking for a great used Jeep for sale at a more than affordable price, look no further than Spirit Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and our impressive selection of used Jeep models. Before you come in, let’s take a closer look at why the Jeep brand is so special and what we have to offer you.

A Look at Jeep’s Rich History of Innovation

The origins of Jeep began during World War II when, in 1941, the US government had reached out to auto manufacturers to create a versatile military vehicle that would replace the Army’s motorcycles and modified Model-T vehicles. Although many well-known manufacturers like Ford and Bantam were invited to contribute models, it was the Willys-Overland Motor Co. that was awarded the first contract to produce their Willys MB (later nicknamed the Jeep) to help on the battlefield. Further testing led to Willys-Overland becoming the primary manufacturer for military vehicles during the war.

There have been multiple theories as to how the term “Jeep” came to be. Some cite the comic strip character Eugene the Jeep, while others reference that the term was military slang for Ford GPs, which were some of the original light-duty trucks used by the military. Whatever the origin was, Jeep made a name for itself during this turbulent period of history.

With the Willys MB Jeep emerging from the war successfully, in 1945, the Willys-Overland Co. transitioned to the civilian market with the creation of the Jeep CJ, the CJ being short for “Civilian Jeep.” The CJ made a successful debut in the consumer market, particularly for those using it for farming and agriculture. From there, the CJ evolved into various model versions, from the CJ-1 to the CJ-2 and CJ-3A, up to the CJ-8 model in 1987. Over this time, the militaristic features began to be replaced with a more consumer-friendly design. The body was redesigned with the addition of tailgates and larger seats that had the ability to be moved back. The CJ was a model that was marketed towards drivers who needed a vehicle that could help with towing and hauling and allowed it to stand out in the automotive market.

As the decades progressed, new models were created, bringing with them innovation. Some standout models were the Jeep Wagoneer in 1963, which introduced a passenger car tailored to families that provided a spacious interior and four-wheel drive. The Jeep Cherokee made its debut in 1974 with a four-wheel design that appealed to the more adventurous drivers looking to venture off of the pavement. The Grand Cherokee arrived in 1992 and offered next-level performance and safety, being the first SUV to have a driver’s side airbag. Today, much of the Jeep lineup remains the same, as fan favorites like the Cherokee, Wrangler, and Wagoneer have stood the test of time by giving drivers the power and capability they’re looking for in an SUV and demonstrating Jeep’s longevity in the automotive world.
